Fiction. Winner of the 2015 Kenneth Patchen Award for Innovative Fiction! In BETWEEN THE LEGS a couple goes on a trip, starting with a tour of Buchenwald, the Nazi concentration camp outside of Weimar, Germany, and ending at a Zen Buddhist retreat in the Swiss Alps. The baggage they carry with them through Weimar, Prague, Vienna and Lucerne contains grief, addiction and sexual obsession. Haunted by Freud and Kafka, this story presents some brutal realities about post-menopausal sex and the need to make radical choices in order to climb out of the hell we perpetrate on each other.

Kate Horsley has published six novels and one collection of short works. In addition to the Kenneth Patchen Award for Innovative Fiction, she has won several literary awards, including the Western States Arts Award for Fiction.

I loved "Between the Legs." Could not put it down. The author's observations are at once delicately detailed and bluntly, bravely point-blank – a wonderfully subversive combination that's hard to pull off – but she did. The story pulses forward – sometimes like breath, sometimes like blood. About halfway through, I wished I'd been underlining – there were so many memorable passages – some really exquisite – about our shared humanity and pain and our wishes and needs to love and to receive love. A profoundly human story of loss, searching, discovery, evolving identity, and the persistent mysteries of our deepest relationships.

The title and cover art well represent the core and feel of the beautifully described, unhappy relationship kept together with dispassionate sex. The couple can barely enjoy their travels or each other as they struggle with their loss, anger, and misery. I was instantly hooked and read through fascinated, wondering if they could ever leave each other and what kind of love might be underneath their emotional shackles.

I just finished the novel. I was fascinated by it. The story, the characters, the language, all worked together perfectly to create an experience that completely suspended disbelief and that, while reading, I never wanted to stop.As I remember, quite a while ago--15 years?--I had a similar experience with Confessions of a Pagan Nun: a Novel. These reactions are not because the story is comfortable to read in all places. But the story is so human and real and sad and so full of hope and growth in the possibilities of what might follow.I hope I have indicated what a fine piece of writing that this reader believes Kate Horsely has given us all. She is wise and intelligent and this book deserves your time.

Another great Kate Horsley story told in her elegant prose. I couldn't stop reading, but I'll never read it again. Tough hard reality that is uncomfortable to experience, but once you start you won't be able to put it down.
