In Miami in 1961, having just arrived from Cuba without their parents, ten-year-old Maria and her younger brother face an uncertain future.

Grade 4-6-The story of Maria, 10, and her 8-year-old brother's freedom flight from Cuba to the United States in the early 1960s is sentimentally told from the perspective of the Cuban upper class. A distant relative meets them at the airport and takes them to her small apartment that they will be sharing with the woman and her mother. The positive and negative aspects of immigrating to and coping with a new country, different culture, and language are adequately covered. However, Maria and Jose have incredible maturity for their ages; they help with chores, do well in school, and generally appear to be model children. Finally, Mami and Papi arrive, and the reunion is joyous though they have lost their sugarcane plantation and must start all over in their new country. Cuban politics are the backdrop to the story; notes at the end explain historical events leading to the exodus. Many children who have immigrated to America will identify with Maria and Jose's experiences, but the writing is bland and the characters are somewhat flat.Jessie Meudell, California Polytechnic University at PomonaCopyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Library Binding edition. It is 1961 and children from Cuba are on a Pedro Pan ("Peter Pan") flight to the U. S. , a secret exodus from the instability and turmoil of the Cuban revolution. Ten-year-old Maria and her younger brother Jose must leave their parents behind and live with their cousin Ines in Miamil While Jose makes friends quickly and welcomes his new life, Maria struggles to adjust to a strange culture as she tries to absorb the news that her parents may never join them. Children Of Flight Pedro Pan is an engaging story of itself, and takes on new relevance with today's national controversies over immigration, multicultural issues, and the concerns of minority children. -- Midwest Book Review --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

Being a Pedro Pan myself, I enjoyed reading it because I found a lot more information which I did not know about. Especially what happened to many of the other children. The editor did not do a very good job with the wording, punctuation, etc...
