Millions of children have been born worldwide through the use of assisted conception. Experts advocate the benefits of disclosure to children about their reproductive beginning at developmentally appropriate times, in age-appropriate ways (Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society, American Infertility Association, Donor Conception Network). I loVe my Family is a carefully crafted tool to assist families to discuss assisted conception (including IVF, egg donor, sperm donor, and surrogacy) with children 3 to 5 years old. The book uses diverse pictures, inclusive language and accurate anatomy to provide a tool to explain all manners of assisted conception for all families. The book offers parent’s information on how to prepare, set the stage and answer questions. The colouring pages provide an opportunity to engage in conversation about values including love, hope and family. A glossary provides alternative words to use for those who prefer plain language rather than medical terms. The reproductive puzzle allows all families to piece together and celebrate their own family story.

Tammy Troute-Wood, RN MN currently works as a sexual and reproductive health specialist in Calgary, Alberta. Tammy has also worked as a labour and delivery nurse, family planning clinic nurse and at the IVF clinic in Calgary. Tammy has two children conceived by InVitro Fertilization. She feels passionate about helping professionals and families increase their understanding and comfort to talk about sexual and reproductive health.

This book is horrible. It is written like a dry, medical text with no feeling or capacity for communication. It's not even worth a more detailed review. Don't buy it. By the time a child is old enough to understand the concepts presented in this book, it is wayyyy too late to spring "the big talk" on them. You're much better starting when your child is young (I started when mine was literally an infant) and explain the situation in simple terms. By the time she is old enough to understand, she is so familiar with "her story" that she will never feel like her parent(s) sat down and pulled the rug out from under her identity and sense of self.

Purchased this book hoping to use it to read to my 3 year olds in an attempt to open a conversation on how they were conceived. The book is written as a poem, and didn't really help explain anything in any clear detail. It is a nice and well written book. There is a section at the back for parents with advice on how to use the book. The book does help to explain that however you came to be, you are loved and wanted.

Great book for explaining in simple terms about how we got help having our miracles.

I had high expectations and this book did not deliver. Do not waste your money. Too technical for the listed age group. Rhymes in some places but not others. Just left me confused.
