    Book details

Like a real life field of dreams Alf Hyslop built it - the Grey Topper music venue in Jacksdale, an obscure Nottinghamshire pit village - and they came - glam kings Sweet, Mud, Bay City Rollers, Hot Chocolate, soul legends Ben E king, Geno Washington, Edwin Starr, reggae greats Desmond Dekker and Jimmy Cliff, heavy metal acts UFO, Judas Priest, Saxon. Then came the punk rock and new wave explosion - The Stranglers, The Vibrators, UK Subs, The Members, The Ruts, Angelic Upstarts, Ultravox, Adam and the Ants, The Pretenders, Toyah, The Specials, Simple Minds. Inevitably with punk, violence flared, culminating in the Angelic Upstarts riot gig that has gone down in Jacksdale folklore. The Palace and the Punks tells the amazing, hilarious (imagine a 1970's Phoenix Nights if Top of the Pops was filmed there), and occasionally sad, true story of the Grey Topper, centred around its last rise and fall and pogo in 1979. From the same author of the acclaimed If the Kids are United.

Another great read - thank you Tony Hill! After reading his first book, "If the Kids are United," which I devoured, I picked up Hill's "Palace of the Punks," which chronicles the rise and fall of The Gray Topper, a club in Jacksdale, Nottinghamshire. Once again, I was quickly immersed in life in the village during the 70's. Hill draws the reader in with fascinating stories about The Gray Topper and the glam, punk, and new wave acts that played there - everyone from Hot Chocolate to Gary Glitter, The Members, The Specials, The Pretenders, and too many more to list. Hill slides effortlessly from stories about bands (including numerous interviews with his "childhood pop heroes"), to family memories and neighborhood anecdotes, but he always comes back to the music. Enjoyed it so much, I read it again!

I spent many hours in my youth listening to the songs from many of the groups mentioned in this book and have actually manged to see quite a few of them in Australia over the last few years and they are still better than most of what is served up today. That Jacksdale must have been some place to grow up in :)A very enjoyable nostalgic journey down memory lane. Highly recommended.
